August 31st, 2009 – Lakewood, CA– Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (CA-39), along with officials from the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board and City of Lakewood council members gathered today at a ribbon cutting ceremony marking the launch of the city’s “Paramount Boulevard Street Improvement Project”. The event highlights the City of Lakewood’s recent completion of new street improvements along Paramount Blvd. and provided a demonstration on stormwater pollution capture and treatment using “Bioretention Tree Well” systems manufactured by Filterra Bioretention Systems.
The Paramount Boulevard Street Improvement project specified the installation of two Filterra Bioretention Systems with selected trees along the Paramount Boulevard corridor, in the City of Lakewood. The Filterra systems combine landscape plants with an engineered soil media to capture and remove storm water runoff pollutants, such as trash and debris, oils and grease, sediments, nutrients, metals and bacteria, prior to discharging clean runoff into local waterways. The selected tree chosen for each Filterra system is the “Majestic Beauty” Tree, which adds needed landscape features into the urban streetscape.
“This is an important day for Filterra and a perfect fit for this particular roadway project in the City of Lakewood”, said William Harris, Western Zone Manager for Filterra Bioretention Systems. “Each Filterra Bioretention System will provide necessary stormwater treatment along Paramount Blvd and is very cost-effective with low maintenance to the City.”
This project was completed with funds provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the County of Los Angeles, and the City of Lakewood. Congresswoman Sanchez secured the federal funds in the 2005 SAFE-TEA-LU bill to repave and improve Paramount Blvd. in a manner that would apply “sustainable design” elements for roadway improvements as well as applying “green design” principals. Filterra Bioretention Systems were the natural choice for project design engineers as Filterra units are small landscape features that require a very little space and are inherently well suited for dense urban environments.
About Filterra Bioretention Systems
Over 3,000 Filterra Bioretention Systems are installed nationwide, each one harnessing nature’s power to treat stormwater runoff through a biological process. Filterra Bioretention Systems provide an urban solution for Low Impact Development (LID), meeting or exceeding federal and state regulatory guidelines for pollutant removal efficiencies of TSS, phosphorus, nitrogen and bacteria. Filterra is approved in jurisdictions across the U.S, including States of Maryland, Washington and Virginia DCR.
Filterra Bioretention Systems is a division of Americast, Inc.
